SJ is a ceramic sculptor based in Atlanta, Georgia, who brings clay to life with Mythical, animal-inspired creations. Born in Micronesia and raised in the American South.

SJ's practice is a transition from twenty years as a psychotherapist to a "listening ear" for clay. She approaches the workbench with the intent to externalize internal emotional landscapes, allowing human-animal hybrids and abstracted forms to emerge through a quiet collaboration with the material.
She utilizes coil and slab construction, integrating detailed molded faces with generous, abstracted bodies and vessels. Her current body of work explores the interplay between humanity and nature through the lens of mythology and folklore. By sculpting faces and utilizing a restrained surface of colored slips and underglazes, She seeks to draw the viewer into an intimate relationship with the work, emphasizing the vulnerability of Being human.
